Rye Arts Festival September 13th – September 28th 2008

September is festival time in Rye and this year’s line up of performers, artists, authors and musicians is one of the strongest ever. The festival opens with acclaimed concert pianist John Lill playing Mozart, Prokofiev and Brahms, and finishes with the dazzling Razumovsky Ensemble presenting an evening of Beethoven and Schubert. Literature is represented by, amongst a truly stellar group of guest speakers, Louis de Bernieres, Michael Holroyd and Katharine Whitehorn. Under a broad theme of ‘War’ Kate Adie will speak about why people are attracted to living dangerously; Lord Guthrie will discuss the morality of war, and Anita Wallfisch will movingly tell how music saved her while in a Nazi concentration camp. Musical headliners include the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, and for folk fans Gigspanner will be bringing the house down. One of the UK’s most talented young female comics, Shappi Khorsandi will be performing for one night only, and award winning comedy theatre company, Lip Service from Manchester are bringing their new show to town. Three of the presenters from The Antiques Roadshow will be talking about their career in the antiques business and Paul Merton will present an evening of silent comedy. This year, too we are delighted to welcome Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen to speak to local school children.
And that’s barely the half of it…..!
